On Tuesday, September 8 at 12 noon, President Barack Obama will speak to the nation’s government school children; purportedly on responsibility, commitment and the value of a good education. The speech will be broadcast from the White House web site. The Department of Education is encouraging school principals to participate in the event.
What do you think? Will your child’s school broadcast the President’s speech? Are you excited about your child participating in this event or concerned about the interruption of the school day? Let us know by posting a comment (after you call your child’s school!):
President Obama announced that on September 8 — the first day of school for many children across America — he will deliver a national address directly to students on the importance of education. The President will challenge students to work hard, set educational goals, and take responsibility for their learning. He will also call for a shared responsibility and commitment on the part of students, parents and educators to ensure that every child in every school receives the best education possible so they can compete in the global economy for good jobs and live rewarding and productive lives as American citizens.

I am calling my kids’ schools and asking about this. Unless my kids are in a goverment class, I don’t think their time needs to be spent listening to our President promote his agenda.
Archer High School administration has told inquiring parents that the school will not participate in the event.
I tried calling GCPS and got transferred to voice mail. I just want to know if they are broadcasting this speech and if they will be using the classroom activities recommended by the Department of Education. I don’t think any politician should have unfettered access to an impressionable, captive audience regardless of topic.

Any time a President of the United States, any president of the United States, wants to speak directly to school age children, educators should bend over backwards to encourage and allow this to occur. I would trust any President to know his/her audience and keep the comments relevant to items that are importance to students.
Stay in School. Set goals and work hard to achieve them.
These are positive messages that can mean more coming from the President as well as from parents and teachers.
