My View of `The Million Taxpayer March` – The Atlanta Tea Party

On Wednesday, “Tax Day,” I attended the Atlanta “Tea Party” at the Capitol along with 20,000 of my closest, ticked off friends. It was an amazing event… the street in front of the Capitol was packed—from sidewalk to sidewalk and beyond—with bodies, at that almost two hours before the event officially kicked off.
By 7 pm, the crowd had expanded down side streets and continued to grow. I ended up in front of one of the big screens about half a block away. When I left at 9:15 pm, I met numerous folks coming from the MARTA station, asking for directions to the rally.
Gwinnett County was well represented, not only in the crowd but on the stage as well. Speakers included State Rep and Snellville resident Melvin Everson; State Senator and candidate for Lt. Governor David Shafer; and Jonathan Krohn, the 14-year-old home-schooled political phenom from Duluth.
The attendees were 99% white and of all ages; obvious contributors to the economic well-being of the country and the type of folks who you might expect to protest high taxes…. you know, taxpayers. Although there were some partisan signs, there was very little about the protest that could be defined along party lines. Knowing what I do about the parties, I assume that most attendees were probably Republican or, at least, conservative in their views.
I continue to wonder why blacks, liberals and Democrats apparently want to pay higher taxes or, at least, don’t mind government’s growing intrusion into our lives and restriction of our freedom and ability to produce wealth.
If you attended a Tea Party on 4/15 or agree with the event’s intent, I don’t want to hear from you. If you oppose the Tea Party movement’s goals, want to pay higher taxes or just couldn’t muster the energy to express your opinion, I want to know why.
