high taxesGwinnett officials have finally put a number on the much anticipated (or dreaded?) property tax increase. Public hearings have been scheduled to weather your anger over a millage increase of 2.87 mills (maybe more if you live in a city).

The hearings are required by law and will be held for the sake of form only… the damage was done when the County Commission adopted a $1.7 billion budget from which they failed to trim millions in unnecessary spending. In fact, Chairman Charles Bannister actually added $19 million in additional questionable expenditures, including $1.06 million for the “Go Green Initiative” and $250K for a light rail study. [Details]

The commission’s consideration of the tax increase follows its adoption earlier this year of a $1.7 billion 2009 budget that reflected needed increased staffing in the county’s police, fire and emergency services departments, efficiency in government service and long-term financial stability.
